The start of summer is almost here, and Yonge North York is already buzzing with lively events & festivals! Whether you’re a longtime local or just discovering the neighbourhood, there’s something special about the way our community comes alive this time of year. From farmers markets and live music to patio dining and festival celebrations, Yonge North York is packed with FREE, fun, and feel-good events that bring neighbours together. Grab your calendar, you’re going to want to block some time to enjoy what’s taking place in the BIA!
North York Farmers Market (Every Thursday)
North York Farmers Market is once again in full swing every Thursday at Mel Lastman Square. Since 1994, it’s been the neighbourhood’s go-to spot for fresh Ontario produce, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, and handmade crafts, and this season runs right through October 9.
If you’re serious about shopping local (and Canadian!), this market is as home-grown as it gets. Vendors from across the GTA and Ontario set up shop with everything from crisp, just-picked veggies and still-warm sourdough to small-batch sauces and handcrafted gifts. Two of my personal must-tries: the Trini doubles and the hearty Ukrainian borscht.
On a recent Farmers Market visit, I met Mikee, the upbeat founder of Mikee’s Gourmet Mushies. What began as a pandemic hobby has blossomed into a full-fledged business, and his booth, brimming with stunning oyster, lion’s mane, and other specialty mushrooms, put an instant smile on my face.
So grab a tote, say hello to the growers and makers, and stock up on your favourites (plus a few new discoveries). See you by the #YONGENORTHYORK sign this upcoming Thursday!
Live Music at North American Centre (Every Wednesday)
Been cooped up in the office all day or stuck in transit? Break up the mid-week grind with the Happy Hour Music Series — free live music every Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM throughout June and July, in the courtyard at 5650/5700 Yonge Street (North American Centre).
It’s the perfect excuse to meet up with a friend, grab a drink and a snack, find a seat (there’s plenty!), and catch up while the music plays. Whether you stay for a few songs or the whole set, it’s an easy, feel-good way to enjoy summer in the Yonge North York BIA. And if it rains, no worries — the event organizers have a cozy indoor Plan B.
Patio Season with CaféTO (From May to October)
This city-wide program gives restaurants the chance to expand or set up new patio spaces so you can enjoy your meals al fresco. Whether you’re catching up with loved ones over drinks or just soaking up the sun at your go-to takeout, there’s no better way to savour summer.
Looking for spots in our district? You’ve got plenty to choose from—sidewalk seating at MeNami, curb lane patios at Tokyo Grill, and popular destinations like Frog, Ehwa Uptown, and Han Ba Tang near Yonge and Sheppard. See a complete list of participating restaurants here.
Don’t forget: summer patio season doesn’t last forever, so make the most of it while you can!
Sunday Serenades (Select Dates)
A local summer favourite is back — Sunday Serenades returns to Mel Lastman Square Main Stage from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM with four evenings of live big band, swing, and jazz music under the stars. It’s FREE, fun, and perfect for a night of dancing or simply soaking in the tunes.

Don’t miss Canada Day! This year July 1st falls on a Tuesday!
One major event you won’t want to miss is Canada Day at Mel Lastman Square — it may be a one-day celebration, but it’s a big one worth highlighting. It’s going to be a day packed with activities, including Kids’ Zones, food vendors, face painting, FREE arts & crafts, Live Music, and what everyone’s been asking for… a fireworks display at 10:00 PM. See here for more details.
