Happy New Year, Yonge North York! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with celebration.
As we settle into the quieter pace of winter, I’m looking forward to enjoying some seasonal activities – like skating at Mel Lastman Square and strolling through our neighbourhood with a warm drink in hand. Of course, winter wouldn’t be complete without indulging in comforting, hearty meals. Lucky for us, Bonjuk Canada has opened their very first Canadian location right here in Yonge North York, and I had the pleasure of checking it out! With the bonus of tax exemption, now is the perfect time to try out this exciting new spot.
Walking into Bonjuk was a genuinely warm and inviting experience, with the friendly staff greeting everyone as they entered. As a first-timer, I appreciated being guided through the different “juk” (porridge) options. The restaurant has a clean and minimalist vibe, with a mix of regular seating and barstool spots. The space is cozy, I’d recommend calling ahead to check availability or opting for takeout. Around the restaurant, TV screens share insights about the company and the dishes they serve, adding a nice touch to the overall experience.
Established in Korea in 2002, Bonjuk has quickly expanded to over 30 restaurants across the globe, solidifying its status as the leading “juk” franchise in Korea. I opted for their most popular dish, the abalone juk, which featured a delicate seafood flavour complemented by a hint of nuttiness. The generous portion size was accompanied by four flavourful sides, including soy braised beef and kimchi.
The service was equally impressive. Alongside the meal, they provided a variety of utensils-a large spoon, a smaller spoon, and chopsticks. At one point, the server noticed my puzzled expression and thoughtfully brought over a fork. While I didn’t end up using it, I appreciated the attentiveness and care. Bonjuk truly delivers a comforting dining experience.
Until January 15th, Bonjuk Canada is offering a special treat to celebrate their opening! When you dine in, you’ll receive a free dessert; for takeout, they’re giving away a free pumpkin juk. During my visit, I opted to dine in and was delighted by the complimentary maple mochis and a refreshing glass of plum juice. The mochi was wonderfully soft and sticky, while the plum juice had just the right balance – lightly flavoured and the perfect complement to the sweetness of the mochi. It’s a thoughtful gesture that adds even more warmth to the experience. Don’t miss out – stop by and enjoy this welcoming gift!
