Celebrating Asian Heritage Month in Yonge North York

The beautiful and warm interior of Dear Saigon on Yonge and Finch, with impressive seating and service

The month of May celebrates Asian Heritage Month by recognizing the incredible contributions of Asian communities, businesses, and organizations across Canada. Here in Yonge North York, the influence and vibrancy of Asian culture have shaped and contributed to the vibrancy of our neighbourhood. To acknowledge this, I did what any good friend would do: I invited my friend Ian, who visited from downtown Toronto, for a fun Friday night exploring some of the amazing Asian-owned spots in our business improvement area. While many think of Chinatown or Koreatown when it comes to Asian cuisine and culture, our local district has many culinary gems worth discovering!

Starting Strong with Vietnamese Flavours

We were torn between a few great spots, but ultimately decided on Dear Saigon at Yonge and Finch. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a welcoming and lively atmosphere, beautiful interior design, fun neon signs, high ceilings, and plenty of seating. We were quickly seated and handed menus, and the service was impressively fast and attentive.

We started with a few appetizers: the chicken wings were massive, sweet and sticky, topped with crispy fried garlic, definitely a must-try. The tofu fresh rolls were light and refreshing, acting as the perfect palate cleanser. For mains, Ian selected a generous bowl of pho, while I ordered the lemongrass beef with rice, which was bursting with flavour.

We also tried some fun drinks. I had the coconut pandan latte, and Ian opted for the tamarind iced tea. Both were super refreshing, and Ian mentioned the iced tea reminded him of home in the Philippines.

Catching Vibes and Capybaras At the Local Arcade

Claw arcades are hugely popular in countries like China and Japan have recently become popular in our district and are quickly becoming a local favourite. Though we considered checking out karaoke or billiards nearby, we decided a return visit with a bigger group of friends would be fun.  So instead, we headed to Claw Me Baby an animated claw game arcade packed with plushies and prizes.

We played a few rounds, and while I had my heart set on winning a tiny Kirby keychain (no luck!), we did manage to snag an adorable capybara plushie, which made it all worth it. The energy in the arcade was infectious everywhere you looked, everyone was enjoying their night out, from groups of friends and couples on dates to kids with their parents. A community hangout spot, full of lighthearted fun.

Ending on a Sweet Note at a Hidden Gelato Spot

We wrapped up the evening with something sweet: a stop at a cozy place near Yonge and Finch that you might miss if you’re not looking for it: Gelato North. This Italian and Korean gelato shop was buzzing on what felt like the first warm night of the season.

I went with a classic mango scoop, while Ian chose raspberry, but we were seriously tempted by their unique and trendy options like Dubai Chocolate and Yuzu Cheesecake. With people lining up and conversations flowing outside, it was the perfect way to end the night.
