Persian New Year, or Nowruz, is just around the corner, bringing with it a fresh start and the arrival of spring! Meaning “New Day” in Persian, Nowruz is an ancient festival that has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. It originated in Greater Persia (modern-day Iran and neighbouring regions) with deep Zoroastrian roots, but over time, it has evolved into a secular, widely celebrated cultural tradition. Nowruz is a time of renewal, joy, and community—and, of course, an opportunity to enjoy incredible Persian food! This year Nowruz is celebrated on Thursday, March 20th.
If you haven’t explored the many incredible Persian businesses and restaurants in our district, now is the perfect time! There are so many fantastic family-owned spots! Here are a few must-visit places to get a taste of Persian culture.
Opened just last year near Yonge and Finch (where Puck ‘N’ Wings used to be), Tehranto has quickly become a go-to spot for dining and entertainment in Yonge North York. More than just a restaurant, it’s a vibrant space where you can experience Persian culture through food, music, and dance.
With live DJs, belly dancing, salsa nights on Tuesdays, Sunday karaoke, there’s always something exciting happening. It’s the perfect place for a fun night out with friends, paired with a delicious Persian feast. If you’re looking to try Persian food for the first time, start with any appetizer that tickles your fancy. For the main course, try the Vaziri, which includes both tender beef and chicken skewers for the best of both worlds. For a sweet ending, don’t miss out on traditional Persian ice cream!
If you haven’t tried Pizza Shab, you’re missing out! These thick, flavour-packed Persian-style pizzas are indulgent, halal, and come with a rich garlic sauce that takes them to the next level. Their mushroom, cheese, and corn pizza, veggie pizza, and the supreme mix (featuring beef and smoky chicken jambon) are all favourites of mine. The deep-dish style makes every bite comforting and satisfying. Make it part of your next pizza night, you won’t regret it!
Craving a massive, fully loaded sandwich? Haida Sandwich is the answer! Iranians love their sandwiches, and Haida brings a taste of Iran’s beloved sandwich shops right to Toronto. You can even order them on Uber Eats for an easy, delicious meal at home.
Their most popular item, the Haida Royal Sandwich, is a must-try. It’s packed with beef and chicken deli, mozzarella, mushrooms, tomatoes, potato sticks, lettuce, pickles, and a special sauce — just thinking about it makes my mouth water!
For those who love healthy snacks, Tavazo is the ultimate spot for high-quality dried fruits and nuts. Nuts and dried fruits play a huge role in Iranian culture – cashews, raisins, almonds, and, of course, the classic pistachios are staples in every Persian household. Offering nuts and seeds to guests is a symbol of hospitality. Tavazo operates in a bulk-style format, so you can buy as little or as much as you’d like!
If you’re feeling adventurous, try lavashak, a Persian fruit leather made from cherries, plums, pomegranates, and other fruits. This ancient snack has been enjoyed for thousands of years and is a must-try for anyone looking for something unique.
I hope you take the opportunity to explore these amazing Persian stores and restaurants. Each one adds to the vibrancy and diversity of Yonge North York. For other Persian businesses in our area, visit the directory page on our website. Wishing you a happy, healthy, and delicious start to spring and a wonderful Persian New Year!
